Precedent study: wood buildings - Umbrella house
The Umbrella House, located in Sarasota, Florida was completed in 1953. The house was designed by the architect Paul Rudolph and commissioned by Philip Hiss, a local property developer. Hiss wanted to not only “attract a new modern clientele” to the area, but also was intending to solve problems of the humid and hot Florida weather. This project impresses me for many reasons, but it is Paul Rudolph’s use of innovative and modern design along with Hiss’s innovative solutions to Florida’s climate that makes this project extraordinary. Tools: Hand Drafting, Rhino 3D, Sketchup, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Wood Shop.
