Community art space: Wood construction
Design of a small community arts space that will house rotating artists-in-residence. An artist-in-residence program provides artists with space to work for a specific period of time in order to explore other communities, environments or institutions. While some residencies offer the artist seclusion in order to create, the primary objective of this community-focused art space is to encourage interaction between artists and the surrounding community through presentations, workshops, exhibits, small classes, and other events during their residency. The site in which the proposed art gallery would take place is located in Oak Park. The design is based and positioned from the division of the site in a grid of four stripes and the two adjacent buildings to the site. The spaces required for the art gallery are divided in two different buildings connected by a middle element that emphasizes the movement from one side of the site to another. The art gallery was designed to accommodate two artists, having two separate rooms for them to make their paintings and an exhibition space. Looking in direction to the north side of the site, the exhibition space is located on the left building, while the artist space alongside with the multipurpose room, kitchen and bathroom are located on the building on the right.
